Framework - Jones Artist Award - Houston Endowment
Using printmaking techniques, debossed into leather and unfolding over three panels, “Framework,” reveals words presented as a fictional story which explore the connection between childhood memory, motherhood, and identity. While giving voice to themes that connect one generation to the next, the piece serves as a reminder that the choices we make today impact the world we pass on to future generations. Furthermore, the triptych addresses societal issues of color favoritism, specifically (as seen) in the phrase, “there was a hope that bleach promised, but I suppose that hope was fleeting.” By posing questions about personal and societal identity, the artwork invites viewers to reflect on the forces that shape us and question the notion of who we are meant to be.
